I have found throughout my youth soccer travels in the United States that amongst the higher level teams, the choice of formation often boils down to one of two, these being the 4-4-2 and the 3-5-2. These two formations also seem to cater to vastly contrasting styles. Teams that organize in a 4-4-2 are conservative, tough to unbalance defensively, and efficient in attack.
